Mare Nostrum

General Information:

Your goal is to conquer all regions through war or marital inheritance. You will lose the game if all your regions are conquered or if you die without an heir. To get an heir, you have to marry another character and hope for a pregnancy. At death, a character's regions get distributed among his/her children. 

To get more gold or soldiers from a region you can upgrade your holdings, this is done through pressing the different icons in the region window. You can also upgrade the region’s defenses.

The player can make alliances to gain strength in wars. If a war reaches +100 warscore you can enforce demands and force the enemy to surrender. If a war reaches -100 warscore, the enemy will force you to surrender. You can also try for a white peace if you want to end the war.

How to control the game:

The game is played by using a Mouse and a Keyboard. You can pan the view using WASD or the Arrow keys. Holding the Middle Mouse Button and moving the mouse also pans the view.

Interact with characters, the map and the UI by clicking with the Left Mouse Button or Right Mouse Button for different effects.

To raise your army Left Click on a owned region and Left Click the army button. Remember that you have to pay upkeep of a raised army. Select your army by Left Clicking on it and move it by Right Clicking somewhere on the map.

Pause and unpause the game using Space.

Change game speed with the Minus(-) key and the Plus(+) key . You can also use the UI in the down-right corner to do this. To react to an event press Backspace or the Z key to dismiss it. To accept it, press Enter or the C key. You can also Left Click on the corresponding UI buttons. Don’t worry, if an event pops up the game pauses but it starts again when you made your decision so be ready.

Mare Nostrum was developed in C++ using the library SFML during 10 weeks as a degree project at Futuregames, a higher vocational education for game development in Stockholm, Sweden.
